On November 30, 2011, the FCC granted the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada a license to construct a full power FM (89.1) community radio station from a transmitter located on Virginia Peak north of Reno. PLAN is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to create more humane solutions to Nevada’s problems. We have until November
The mission of KXNV is to create and present vibrant, informative programming of local origin and interest with a strong commitment to musical and cultural diversity and inclusion. In addition to providing comprehensive, alternative coverage of local and state news and community affairs, KXNV serves as a community resource for development of broadcasting skills, particularly among youth and communities of color.
Community radio is a radio service offering a third model of radio broadcasting in addition to commercial and public broadcasting. Community stations serve citizens from the local grassroots perspective. Residents of Reno and Sparks will make the decisions about what airs on the station in keeping the the KXNV Mission Statement. Broadcast content that is popular and relevant to local, specific audiences but is often overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters will be a priority. Community radio stations are operated and influenced by the communities they serve. KXNV will provide a mechanism for enabling individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own stories, to share experiences and, in a media-rich world, to become creators and contributors of media.
